How does a hot water radiant floor work?

A hot water radiant floor is a heating system integrated directly into the floor. Rather than having radiators on the walls, the idea is to run hot water through pipes that are hidden under the floor, often in a concrete screed.

How does it work in practice ?

1. Water is heated

The water is heated using a boiler, heat pump, or other system (such as solar energy). It does not need to be boiling hot; around 30 to 40°C is sufficient.

2. The water circulates under the floor

It flows through a network of small pipes arranged in a loop under the floor. These pipes heat the floor, which in turn heats the entire room.

3. The heat rises gently

This system heats the room very evenly. There are no cold areas, and since the heat comes from the floor, you get that pleasant feeling of gentle warmth under your feet.

4. A thermostat regulates the temperature

You can control the temperature room by room with thermostats. Once properly set, everything is fairly accurate and automatic.

Key takeaways:

  • It's super comfortable: no more cold feet in winter!
  • It's economical: since it operates at low temperatures, it consumes less energy than conventional heating systems.
  • And what's more, it's discreet: no radiators, nothing that takes up space.
